Standing Start

'Standing Start' by Journeyman Pictures.

A wonderful twelve minute study of the most explosive moment of track racing.
The standing start of the team sprint.
Subject of this study - Craig McLean, known to leave the team behind at the start, lucky to have two more of the best to follow up.
Fantastic film I could just leave on repeat..... and repeat... and repeat.

Jure Robic

Jure Robic was killed today when hit by a car whilst training.

Jure won RAAM 5 times, broke the world 24 hour record (518.7 miles) and won Le Tour Direst twice.

He was probably the world's greatest endurance cyclist.
He died today aged 45.

Just makes me realize that no matter how experienced we are as riders we are not safe, be aware out there.

Here is a great interview with him by Daniel Coyne from the NYT 2006

Q&A with Germain Burton

I occasionally popped into DeVer cycles in Streatham, South London when I lived in the vicinity but I never really knew much about Maurice Burton who ran the store.
Over time I heard his name and the stories whilst on many a club run or session at Herne Hill.

Looks like we may well be hearing more about his son in the coming years

Valet Bike Parking at Wrigley Field.

It may be a little late in the season to post this with only a handful of home games left, but last night I made it to my first Cubs game. I am not really a big baseball fan but then we didn't really watch much due to the rain delays and an exhausted two year old. Some people would say there is slim chance of seeing 'baseball' at a Cubs game anyway. What would I know I 'keep an eye' on the Mets.

The Cubs have free valet bike parking at all their home games.
You drop your bike at the secure garage on the corner of Waveland and Clark where it is stored in bike racks and watched over by security.

My sister-in-law, Kathryn, did ride under dark ominous skies at we met her at the bike park.
During the game she commented on how wet her bike would be getting.
Later we go to collect the bike and as she squeezed water out from her helmet padding we were very pleased to see the 'valet attendant' wiping down her saddle and bars etc with cloths and drying everything off. Super service. Did I mention it is all free?

Look at the great array of bikes here, a few with child seats and a couple of very nice looking track frames.

The parking is sponsored by SRAM and the World Bicycle Relief Fund. Any donations are welcome.

Save the Herne Hill Velodrome

Image

From the Herne Hill Velodrome website:

Save the Velodrome’ Campaign launches today with an open invitation to a public meeting.

An alliance of residents and cyclists has been formed to save a former Olympic stadium from closure. The Herne Hill Velodrome is the oldest cycling track in the country and the home of the 1948 Olympic Cycling Championships. But now it faces closure due to deterioration and lack of funding. There is no alternative track in London for the hundreds of children who ride and race there. In the past, that has included Bradley Wiggins, the three-time Olympic gold medallist, who began his competitive cycling career at Herne Hill.
The Campaign is the brainchild of Hillary Peachey, a local resident whose children use the site regularly. She says, “It seems shameful that, with 2012 approaching, London cannot even sustain the facilities it has. That is why we are calling on Londoners as a whole to save this precious resource.”

The Campaign kicks off with a public meeting at Dulwich College at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 6th October. But Londoners are asked to register their support on http://www.savethevelodrome.com

Campaigners aim to secure the future of the site and make it a viable long-term facility for all, including local residents and schools. Hillary adds, “We are going to find a viable, sustainable and environmentally sensitive solution. The only given is that it must be cycling-led, inclusive and work for the entire community.”

The agenda for the public meeting is to:
• raise awareness of the plight of the facilities;
• hear suggestions for the future proposed regeneration;
• review potential plans.

Peter Cattermole, whose club runs the site currently, says, “If you came here on a Saturday and saw hundreds of kids bombing around the track, you’d think it would be criminal to lose it. Anyone who cares about kids, cycling or the environment should come to the public meeting.”

To stay open, the Velodrome will need corporate and private funding, together with volunteer support. The campaigners are hopeful of getting it. “Cycling is one of the most popular sports in the country. If we pull together, we can save this amazing place for future generations,” says Hillary.

Details of public meeting:
Wednesday 6th October
7.30pm to 9.30pm
Great Hall, Dulwich College
Dulwich Common, London SE21 7LD

You may not stand to lose if Herne Hill Velodrome closes, but cycling will. Herne Hill was my introduction to track racing about 10 years ago. I started riding there maybe twice a week for 4 years before relocating to NYC. When you visit HH you can sense the history of the place. Do a google search see what you find, so many of cycling's greats have graced it's gentle banks. I know the funding powers that be see the new 2012 Olympic Velodrome as being HH's new replacement, but it won't be. Well maybe not for a long time. And besides HH is outdoors, we don't want to be cooped up all the time, that's not why we started riding, allow us our options.

I'll keep you informed of the campaigns activities and urge you to show your support for this treasure of cycling.

Filler

Not that Dave's work is mere filler, just that after moving house my brain is full of 'filler' and not quite up to blog operating standard.

Another man who causes a few grins is Garmin's; David Zabriskie, he is described at the stage start as having a “Retro Man” style with the moustache and the hat with the skip turned up.

'Kuurne'

'Kuurne'
2010 - inks on paper - 25" x 18"

I was waiting for the professional photographs before showing this. So here it is. 'Kuurne' shows the determination that took Bobbie Traksel to victory in this year's Kuurne Brussels Kuurne.
This was a lot of fun to do.
Layers and layers of inks, letting them run, wetting the paper, redrawing, more layers of ink, more drips, some splashing, clean the flooring, more drawing, wondering when to stop.
This is quite possibly one of the top two that I have done yet.

I am going to enjoy looking at this one, not something I can always say, happy to have it on a wall.
Soon going to be on a new wall in our new apartment.

I hope Bobbie can get a ride next year.
